Granules manufactured by the GRANSHOT
method follow a normal size distribution diagram with
the peak at a diameter of about 15 mm.For the most common steel
grades the bulk density is about 4.5 Kg/l.Such a product is ideal
for investment casting foundries where a common chargeweight could
be 30Kg or less. The quantity of granules can be weighed with precision,
which saves the need for subsequant additions and allows improved
process control.
Granshot is a water granulation method. After
dewatering the granules are completely dried in a heating unit,
followed by oxide cleaning in a rotating machine.Granules for investment
casting foundries are packed in steel drums. |

In
most types of furnaces granules melt quicker than conventional
material such as cuttings, powder and bars, so savings are
made energy with shorter heatcycles. In tests that were made
comparing CLA 2 bar stock with GRANSHOT granules,
the Uddeholm product showed an increase
in production rate of more than 21% and a reduction in power
consumption of more than 20%.The test results obtained in
melting GRANSHOT granules were acheived
through the furnace* with at least 50% of the total charge
weight ,and as soon as a heel had been established , the remaining
granuales were added in a steady stream.Whilst technique may
vary from one type of furnace to another,it is clear that
considerable savings can be accomplished by experimenting
and ascertaining the best charge method according to type
and size of furnace. It is not uncommon for investment casting
foundries to mix returning scrap of known quality with GRANSHOTS
granules and excellent melting results are documented.GRANSHOTS
are surface oxidation free, resulting in considerably less
slag than that found in ingot (bar) stock.

Uddeholm
manufactures GRANSHOTS in accordance
with customer's specification .All alloying is undertaken
and the granulated product is supplied in a ready - to- use
form immediate application in the furnace. For those foundries
which prefer in - house alloying , Uddeholm offers the advantage
of GRANSHOTS in the form of pure
iron.The GRANSHOT process also
lends itself to the production of non- ferrrous metals,e.g.
copper, brass and bronze.Further , Uddeholm Technology also
offers re- cycling of scrap.material sent to the Uddeholm
plant is remelted and composition adjusted prior to delivery
to the customer for direct reuse.
